National Park Highlights
Paklenica National Park is carved into the southern face of the Velebit mountain range — Croatia's largest mountain massif. Two dramatic canyons, Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica, cut deep into the karst, forming one of Europe's premier destinations for hiking, climbing, and wilderness adventure.
Dramatic Gorge
The main canyon of Paklenica is a towering natural cathedral of limestone — walls rising 400 metres above a narrow gorge carved by the Velika Paklenica stream. The well-marked trail from the park entrance winds through forest and rock, offering ever more dramatic scenery as you ascend towards the high Velebit plateau.

Climbing Destination
Paklenica is one of Europe's most celebrated rock climbing destinations. Over 350 bolted climbing routes of all grades are established on the canyon walls, attracting climbers from across the continent. The quality of the limestone and the dramatic setting make it exceptional for both beginner and expert climbers.

Wildlife & Summit
The canyon leads to the high Velebit plateau, where the summit of Vaganski Vrh (1,757 m) offers a panorama stretching from the Adriatic to Bosnia. The park is home to one of Croatia's last populations of brown bears, golden eagles, and the endangered griffon vulture — for wildlife lovers, it is extraordinary.

Responsible Travel
Paklenica's karst terrain is fragile and the surrounding Velebit forests are home to protected species. Always follow marked trails and heed warning signs — going off-path can be both dangerous and ecologically harmful.
For longer routes or summit climbs, hiring a certified local guide supports the local economy, increases your safety, and ensures you respect the park's protected zones and wildlife habitats.
There are no bins on the mountain trails. Carry a bag for your litter and take everything back out — leaving the park cleaner than you found it is the highest expression of respect for the wilderness.
Perfect Timing
Paklenica is a superb destination in every season, but spring and autumn offer the most comfortable hiking and climbing conditions — and the most vivid natural scenery.
April - June
Wildflowers in the canyon, cool hiking temperatures, rushing streams
September - October
Golden forest colours, crisp mountain air, best climbing conditions
Autumn is widely regarded as the best season for rock climbing in Paklenica — cool, dry, and with perfect friction on the limestone walls
The main canyon trail can be busy in summer — shoulder season allows you to walk at your own pace and experience the gorge in relative solitude
National park entry and accommodation in nearby Starigrad-Paklenica are reduced outside summer, offering better value for mountain visitors
Bears, eagles, and griffon vultures are most active in spring and autumn — the best seasons for wildlife observation in the Velebit
Spring streams fill the canyon with the sound of rushing water; autumn colours the forest in deep golds and reds — both seasons are visually spectacular
Shoulder season lets you hike Paklenica in the morning and swim in the Adriatic at Starigrad beach in the afternoon — a uniquely Croatian double experience
No other national park in Croatia offers the same dramatic contrast — towering karst cliffs above and the shimmering sea below. Come in shoulder season and have it almost entirely to yourself.
